The ABB moulded case circuit-breakers are proposed into eight sizes: T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7 and S8. The rated ultimate breaking capacity under short-circuit, Icu, at 380/415V AC is available starting from 16kA up to 200kA.
To fulfil the various application requirements, they are available in the following ranges:
- Circuit-breakers for AC and DC power distribution
- Circuit-breakers for motor protection
- Circuit-breakers for applications up to 1000 V AC and DC
- Switch-disconnectors.
For each size, circuit-breakers are available in the three and four-pole versions. They are also equipped with a complete range of protection releases: thermomagnetic, magnetic only adjustable and electronic releases of the latest generation.
T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6 circuit-breakers fitted with TMD and TMA thermomagnetic releases can also be used in direct current plants, with a field of application from 1A to 800 A and a minimum operating voltage of 24V DC.
Power distribution circuit-breakers
The ABB SACE family of moulded case circuit breakers - Tmax and Isomax - is divided into different, perfectly integrated, ranges (Tmax T1B 1p, T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6 and T7, S8), able to cover a range of service currents from 1 to 3200 A.
The power distribution circuit breakers are available in the fixed, plug-in or withdrawable, three-pole and four-pole versions.
The Tmax T1 circuit breaker is also available in the single pole
Tmax T1B 1p version, with breaking capacities of 25 kA at 220/230 V AC.
Interchangeability of the releases
The Tmax T4,T5 and T6 circuit-breakers can be fitted either with thermomagnetic, magnetic only or electronic releases, which are all interchangeable with each other. In fact, thanks to the simplicity of their installation, the type of release can be replaced rapidly even by the end user, according to their requirements and needs: in this case, correct assembly remains the responsibility of the user himself. All this means increasing the flexibility of use of the circuit-breakers, with considerable savings thanks to the better rationalization of stock management.
Conformity with Standards
The moulded-case circuit-breakers and their accessories conform to the IEC 60947-2 international Standards and comply with the EC “Low Voltage Directives (LVD) no. 73/ 23 EEC” and “Electromagnetic compatibility Directives (EMC) no. 89/336 EEC”.
ABB SACE’s Quality System conforms to the ISO 9001 International Standard and to the equivalent European EN ISO 9001 and Italian UNI EN ISO 9001 Standards. The certifying Body is the Italian Shipping Register (RINA - QUACER): ABB SACE has reached its third qualification confirmation. The ABB SACE Test Room is accredited by SINAL.
The apparatus conforms to the prescriptions of the on-board installations and approvals by the major Shipping Registers are in progress.

Circuit-breakers for motor protection
Starting, switching and protection of three-phase asynchronous motors are fundamental operations for their correct use. ABB SACE proposes two different solutions for this type of application in the series of moulded-case circuit-breakers:
- a traditional system which has a circuit-breaker for protection against the short-circuit, a thermal relay for protection against overload and missing or unbalanced phase and a contactor for motor switching
- a system of integrated protection, thanks to the PR222MP release, which ensures the following protections: against short-circuit, overload, against missing or unbalanced phase, and against rotor locking.
Field of application
Available in six sizes (T2, T3, T4, T5, S6 and T7), they can be used in a vast range of start-ups, from 0.37 kW up to 250 kW with Tmax T5 and 355 kW with Isomax S6 at 400 V AC.

Circuit-breakers for applications up to 1000 V
Within the panorama of the ABB moulded-case circuit-breakers there is also the range of circuit-breakers for applications in direct current and in alternating current up to 1000 V.
The typical sectors of use for these are mining, road and railway tunnel installations, electric traction and industrial applications in general.
The circuit-breakers are available in three-pole and four-pole version with TMD or TMA adjustable thermomagnetic releases for use in direct and alternating current, or in version three-pole with electronic releases (Tmax with PR221DS, PR222DS/P; Isomax with PR21x), for applications in alternating current.
The dimensions of these circuit-breakers are the same as the standard ones. They can, moreover, be combined with all the accessories available, except for the residual current, and can be converted into the removable or withdrawable version using a conversion kit and fixed parts of the standard circuit-breakers.

Switch-disconnectors
The switch-disconnectors derive from the corresponding circuit-breakers, of which they keep the same overall dimensions, the versions, the fixing systems and the possibility of mounting the accessories. This version only differs from the circuit-breakers in the absence of the protection releases. They are characterised by a rated voltage of 690 V in alternating current and up to 750 V in direct current.

Circuit-breakers according to UL CSA Standards
In the field of molded case circuit breakers, conforming to the UL489 and CSA C22.2 Standards, SACE’s proposal presents the following ranges:
- power distribution circuit breakers (fitted with thermomagnetic or electronic trip units)
- power circuit breakers with magnetic only trip units for motor protection (Motor Control Protection - MCP)
- switch-disconnectors for use as isolators or switching devices for lines, busbars or plant parts (Molded Case Switch - MCS).
The possibilities are increasingly greater for those customers who also operate on the markets subject to the standards defined by the UL/CSA Standards since they have an entire range of molded case circuit-breakers available, with continuous current ratings which go from 100A to 2500A and interrupting rating, at 480 V AC, which can reach 100kA.
As well as extending the field of continuous current ratings downwards, introduction of the T1 size means that the applications typical of power subdistribution where a circuit-breaker characterised by limited overall dimensions, but which guarantees great versatility in mounting accessories and installation, is particularly worthwhile.
The smallest of the molded case circuit breakers, the single-pole T1, conforming to the UL, is also presented.
Finally, the S8 circuit-breaker according to UL/CSA Standards also allows completion towards the higher continuous rating currents. Isomax S8V 1600, 2000 and 2500 A lend themselves to being installed immediately to the load side of the power supply sources of the low voltage systems and are suitable for operating safely under the most severe service conditions required of modern plants. The high performances, great flexibility of accessories, ease of coordination with the devices located on the load side and the possibility of limiting the depth of the switchgear thanks to the reduced overall dimensions of the circuit breaker make Isomax S8 a particularly advantageous solution.
